Tiffany & Co

For nearly two decades, Tiffany & Co has adorned America's most stylish and prominent personalities with luxury jewelry. Presidents of the United States have sought out the jeweler over the years, and the company collaborated with some of the world's top superstars, most recently Jay-Z and Beyonce.

Tiffany is well-known for its high-end merchandise, particularly its diamond and sterling silver jewelry which are elegant and radiant. The company, arguably one of the world’s most iconic jewelry brands was founded in 1837 in New York.

Charles Lewis Tiffany started the company with his friend John B. Young after (Tiffany’s) father loaned him $1,000.  Originally, the first store did not sell jewelry and was known as a “fancy goods” shop on 259 Broadway, the heart of the city.

During the 1840s, Charles began purchasing diamonds from French aristocrats who were cash-strapped after the war.  In the 1850’s he took full control of the company, renamed it Tiffany & Co, and transitioned to jewels.

Tiffany Blue Box

In 1845, Tiffany produced the country’s first mail-order catalog, which portrayed many of its finest designs and craftsmanship. The company adopted a light blue color to brand the catalog which was famously known as the ‘Blue Book.’

The turning point for their branding came in 1886 when Tiffany introduced its signature diamond engagement ring, which was snuggled inside a light ‘Blue jewelry Box.’ The color and box became so desirable and recognizable that it was trademarked as ‘Tiffany Blue’ also forget.mes -not blue and robin’s blue egg.’

Tiffany has gone to great lengths to protect its packaging from people who would walk into the main store attempting to buy empty boxes, prompting Tiffany's founder to implement a rule that the box is only available with the purchase of one of their pieces.

Tiffany Makes History

Tiffany developed the classic engagement ring that we know today in 1886. As a symbol of everlasting love, the luxury jewelry business designed a setting for a diamond solitaire ring with six invisible prongs that allow light to pass through and reflect extra shine.

Other engagement rings held a stone near to the band, which was a break from the stylish and practical design. Another departure from the intricate engraving and the ornament that graced engagement rings at the t.mes was the plain metal. Tiffany wanted the diamond’s splendor to be the center of attention.

Tiffany became the first jeweler to make a distinctive engagement ring when the design was completed Mr. Tiffany was so sure of the ring's attraction that he put his name on it and presented it with his unique style.

Tiffany now sells jewelry, sterling silver, China, crystal, stationery, fragrances, water bottles, watches, personal accessories, and leather goods.

Tiffany’s Future

Under the artistic leadership of Tiffany's son Louis Comfort Tiffany, the company became even more famous in the twentieth century. Since then, the company has opened locations in major cities all around the world.

In January 2021, LVMH paid $16.8 billion for Tiffany & Co. The 184-year-old jewelry company is undertaking a rebranding that includes new brand ambassadors and limited-edition jewelry, including its recent collaboration with Patek Philippe for the revised nautilus 5711.

Despite concerns about Tiffany's present financial situation following its recent acquisition, the historic brand's future appears to be as bright as its genuine gems.
