Is There A Better Bauhaus Brand Than NOMOS Glashütte?

For three years, I worked for the German brand NOMOS Glashütte as a key account manager in 17 different markets around the world. As you can imagine, having a firsthand view of the differences between so many cultures when it comes to the hobby of watch collects ing and even the understanding of and approach to the very concepts of luxury was an enriching experience. Despite the incredible differences between the buying habits of watch lovers and the commercial strategies employed by retailers, o

NOMOS Watches

Each award-winning NOMOS watch reflects the design skills and knowledge of its German heritage. Produced in Glashütte, Saxony since 1990, vintage NOMOS t.mes pieces even feature the "SA" designation for Saxony, proof of the company’s ties to its homeland.

NOMOS Glashütte handcrafts its mechanical and automatic movements in house, an exceptional feat in the world of luxury watches. In a nod to the German tradition of precise engineering, NOMOS Glashütte embraces CNC and laser technology for some of its more complex pieces. Known for having thin cases—somet.mes s just nine postage stamps thick—the house’s products are award-winning, elegant designs for men and that offer outstanding accuracy for both and settings.

The Glashütte Mark of Quality

As a mark of authenticity, NOMOS Glashütte proudly engraves the letters DUC (“Deutsche Uhrenwerke NOMOS Glashütte”) on its hand-wound and automatic movements. In order to put the name Glashütte on a watch, the law requires that at least 50% of the movement’s value come from the region. In the case of NOMOS Glashütte as much as 95% of the watch is locally made. The jewel bearing in the movement is generally the only part sourced from an outside company, though this company still follows NOMOS Glashütte’s specifications to guarentee both authenticity and quality.

In-house Production

NOMOS Glashütte develops and produces all its own movements, which is now extremely rare in the watchmaking industry. It has actually patented a number of these components, further proof of its innovation and attention to quality. For example, NOMOS watches have a proprietary mechanical caliber featuring the date and a power reserve, which signals when the watch needs to be wound. In 2014, NOMOS Glashütte invented a proprietary escapement called the "swing system," which is made up of a balance spring, escape wheel, and pallet that powers the mechanical process. The first iteration of the company’s swing system, called the Alpha caliber, is part of the Metro line. Other standout features in its components include tempered blue screws, a sunburst decoration, and the Glashütte ribbings that decorates each movement.

Clean Design

The Tangente design won the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève 2018. This bestselling watch has an easy-to-read dial and a simple design with Arabic numerals and durable cowhide straps. Another popular choice, the Ludwig Neomatik, is an ultra-thin, smart, and sleek watch that features Roman numerals with index hour markers and minute markers around the inner rim. The elegant Orion has a sapphire crystal glass back through which you can see the NOMOS Glashütte Alpha mechanical movement. The square case of the Tetra Neomatik is also eye-catching. The more athletically minded may prefer the dive watch, water-resistant to 200 meters, or the line, featuring automatic movements with a 42-hour power reserve.

Leather Straps

In addition to having top-of-the-line complications, NOMOS watches are highly durable. The leather in NOMOS Glashütte straps come from Texas workhorses sourced by the Chicago-based Horween Leather company. The leather straps have a slight brownish tone to them and may feature a stamp from the leather company, called the shell, which serves as a mark of authenticity.
