ROLEX SUBMARINER WATCHES
The Rolex Submariner is an iconic t.mes
piece whose renown now spans over seven decades. Rolex made its mark on the world in 1926 with the world’s first waterproof wristwatch. The company took that innovation to the next level in 1953 with the introduction of the Rolex Submariner, the first-ever divers’ watch waterproof to 100 meters. Today, the Rolex Submariner continues to be the gold standard among divers’ watches. Features that set it apart include a luminescent Chromalight display and a glidelock extension system that adjusts the bracelet to fit snugly over a wetsuit. Loaded with practical features and crafted from the finest quality, the Submariner is the ideal t.mes
piece not only for divers, but for anyone seeking cutting-edge technology paired with high-end luxury.
HISTORY OF THE ROLEX SUBMARINER
The 6204, Rolex’s first Submariner, made its high-profile appearance at the 1954 Basel Fair in Switzerland. The dive watch stunned with its slender case, featuring a pencil-thin hand and modest crown. Further transcending the limits of t.mes
keeping was its groundbreaking 100m water resistance—a huge feat for its day. Rolex later launched two other versions: the 6200 and 6205. The 6200 featured a bigger crown, improving its water resistance to 200m.
In 1959, Rolex unveiled a bold new vision for the Submariner—the 5512. This redesigned reference introduced a larger, more robust case (from 36mm to 40mm) and crown guards for better protection. The words ‘Superlative Chronometer/Officially Certified’ appear prominently on the dial, affirming the uncompromising precision behind the 5512's Caliber 1560 movement. However, its certified status came at a premium—one that many consumers were not yet prepared to pay.
In response, in 1962, Rolex launched another model of the Submariner: the 5513. This was virtually identical to the 5512, except it wasn’t COSC certified. Due to this, the watch was able to be priced more affordably, and coupled with its clean, classic design, it quickly became one of the Swiss brand’s most popular models. The 5513 enjoyed a much longer production run than its predecessor.
In 1969, Rolex introduced the first Submariner Date model, 1680. This particular piece marked a pivotal shift in the Submariner's identity, transforming it from a diver's watch to an elegant t.mes
piece. It was the first Submariner to come with a cyclops lens date window; a nod to the everyday wearer who might wear the watch out of the water as much as in. It also introduced some minute design updates, such as white printing on the dial instead of gold.
FEATURES PERFECTED FOR DIVERS
Rolex Submariner watches match the demands of an underwater journey. Each component of the display glows with luminescent Chromalight technology, ensuring that the Submariner is easy to read even in the darkest depths of the ocean. Broad minute hand and large and patterned hour markers add further to readability under adverse conditions. The bezel has engraved 60-minute graduation to facilitate accurate monitoring of decompression stops. Finally, the bracelet of each Rolex Submariner has a glidelock extension system, which adjusts to fit snugly over a wetsuit or bare wrist.
PEACE OF MIND AT ANY DEPTH
Today’s Submariner t.mes
pieces keep perfect t.mes
to a depth of 1,000 feet. The secret to this reliability is the totally waterproof Oyster case, which is constructed from a single piece of stainless steel, white gold, or yellow gold. Both the back and bezel of the Oyster case are hermetically screwed to this middle case for further water resistance. Finally, the Submariner’s Triplock winding crown protects the movement with a triple waterproofing system.
THE HEIGHT OF SWISS PRECISION
Rolex crafts, assembles, and tests every detail of each watch in its production facilities in Switzerland. Rolex Submariner watches must pass an extreme battery of drop tests, including one that subjects the watch to the impact of 5000 g-forces. Rolex also submerges each Submariner watch to ensure it can stand up to extreme pressure.
CRAFTED FROM LUXURY MATERIALS
Stainless steel Submariner watches are crafted from Rolex’s proprietary Oystersteel, which resists corrosion in any environment while maintaining a beautiful sheen. Submariner watches crafted from feature Rolex’s unique 18k gold alloy, which maintains untarnished brilliance generation after generation.
Then, every diamond set in a luxury Submariner t.mes
piece is carefully selected by Rolex’s gemologists. Elegant blue, deep green, and black dials with clearly visible date windows perfectly offset the precious metals and gems of each watch.

Watch collects
ors appreciate how these watches tend to hold their value over t.mes
. The reason for this is a manufactured shortfall of supply: Rolex maintains scarcity to drive demand and, in turn, value. Estimates suggest the company makes about 800,000 watches annually—while the demand for Rolex watches in general, including Submariners, far exceeds this number.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
From its t.mes
less design and high-quality materials, to its precise and reliable movement, the Rolex Submariner embodies extraordinary craftsmanship. We answer the most frequently asked questions about this watch.
DOES THE ROLEX SUBMARINER REQUIRE A BATTERY?
No, the Rolex Submariner does not require a battery. It is powered by a mechanical, self-winding movement, automatically wound by the movements of the wearer's wrist.
WHY IS THE ROLEX SUBMARINER SO POPULAR?
When it was first introduced in the 1950s, the Submariner was a well-made, affordable tool built for diving. Its impressive water resistance, graduated rotatable bezel, and luminescent dial markers, hands, and pip made it one of the most versatile watches underwater. In the 1970s, with quartz watches becoming more popular, Rolex began to market their watches as luxury items, thereby altering consumers' perceptions of the brand. Since then, Rolex's superb mechanical advancements have only reinforced the Submariner's status as a prized accessory.
SHOULD I BUY A PRE-OWNED ROLEX SUBMARINER?
Absolutely. While buying brand-new has its perks, pre-owned Submariners—and this applies to all other watches—make perfect financial sense. Think of it this way: Similar to how a new car loses value once driven off the lot, when you buy a new watch, it depreciates the moment it leaves the store. Getting a certified pre-owned Rolex, however, means someone else has already taken the initial depreciation hit. Consequently, if you do decide to sell it, you're more likely to retain your initial investment, or possibly even make a profit if the model has appreciated in value.
HOW CAN I TELL IF A ROLEX SUBMARINER IS AUTHENTIC?
A Rolex Submariner's authenticity—much like the brand's storied heritage and lavish appeal—hinges on several fine, delicate details. From the dial to the bezel, it is necessary to check the following before committing to a purchase:
- Serial Numbers: Real Rolex serials have precision diamond edges. Fake watches, on the other hand, typically have faint, tiny dots across their numbers (mainly due to shoddy stamping methods). If the serial numbers seem low-quality or are missing, it's probably a fake.
- Bezel: The Submariner’s rotating bezel is one of its most distinguishing features, and a great way to tell a genuine piece from a dud. Check the design of the crystal casing, bezel, base, and bottom. A genuine Rolex Submariner has a flatter top, with the bezel and casing sitting flush and even. If the crystal is curved at all, or the bezel feels loose—it’s likely a replica.
- Weight: Due to the high-quality heavy metals used, a genuine Rolex will have a noticeable weight. If a watch feels too light, consider this a red flag.
- The Face: Misalignment, uneven fonts or the absence of the Rolex crown logo are clear signs of a counterfeit.
- Caseback: Rolex Submariner watches (like most Rolex watches) are not engraved or branded on the caseback. Exceptions to this are the Rolex Sea-Dweller, military-issue models, and some early models produced in the 1900s. If your Rolex Submariner’s back is decorated or transparent, it's likely not genuine.
- Date Window: Rolex watches are well known for their cyclops magnifying lens above their date windows. On a genuine Rolex, the cyclops will magnify the date 2.5 t.mes
s. If the magnification of the date appears flat, or if it’s not magnifying anything (or isn’t there at all), you’re most likely dealing with an un Replica Sunglasses model.
- Price: Finally, remember that quality comes at a price. If a deal appears too good to be true, it most likely is. Be wary and always buy from a reputable source.

HOW SHOULD I CARE FOR MY ROLEX SUBMARINER?
The Rolex Submariner is designed for lasting quality and daily use, and so requires very little daily care. However, here are a few general watch care tips you should keep in mind:
- Wind Before Use: When worn for the first t.mes
or if it has stopped, your Rolex Submariner will need to be manually wound. To do so, first unscrew the winding crown completely until it releases from the case. Then, applying gentle pressure, rotate it clockwise—about 30-40 rotations. Once done, “click” the crown back into place. Your watch is now wound and ready to wear.
- Service As Needed: We recommend servicing your Rolex once every 5-10 years, depending on the model and its usage. Make sure to take it to an authorized watch dealer or service center for professional servicing.
- Clean Regularly: Use a soft cloth to wipe your watch daily to remove any dirt, sweat or dust. Rolex even suggests rinsing your watch with you in the shower. Just make sure to thoroughly dry your watch after to prevent soap scum or water spots.
- Avoid Magnetic Fields: Magnetic fields can cause your Rolex to run too fast or too slow. As such, you should avoid bringing your watch into close proximity with magnetic objects such as laptops, speakers, or fridges.
- Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Keep your watch away from harsh chemicals such as perfumes, detergents, and cosmetics, as these may cause damage to the watch material.
WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO STORE MY ROLEX SUBMARINER?
A watch box safeguards your Rolex against dirt, dust, and scratches. They come in different sizes with compartments lined with soft fabric to keep your t.mes
pieces safe. Some boxes also come with the added security of a lock.
Another more sophisticated option is a display cabinet. Though traditional, it offers the old-world charm of an in-home showcase, allowing your Submariner to be enjoyed even when not worn. Also, if you're not planning to wear the watch for a while, consider storing it in a watch winder box. This will keep the watch's movement running smoothly and for longer.
Note that while you can use original boxes for storage, we do not recommend doing so. Your t.mes
piece may lose value if the box is damaged. Moreover, these boxes can quickly become cumbersome if you own a lot of watches, creating clutter and providing little visual pleasure.
