A Passion for Fashion
Guess Jeans founder Georges Marciano nurtured an interest in fashion from a young age. Born in Morocco, Marciano grew up in Marseille, France, selling stock silk ties door-to-door. But Marciano was creative and thought he could design the ties himself and use better materials. This ultimately led to the founding of the Marciano family clothing business named “MGA” (Maurice, Georges, and Armand) that Georges grew with two of his three brothers. MGA took off and soon several of its shops dotted the French Riviera.
A Fascination for the American Dream
In 1977, all four Marciano brothers—Paul, Georges, Maurice, and Armand—traveled to the United States. American culture fascinated the brothers, particularly the popularity of denim as a clothing staple. Georges began keeping a stylebook to record his design concepts. These became the first Guess designs. By 1981, he was ready to make his vision a reality and decided to move to the U.S. and open a shop in Beverly Hills. His brother Maurice helped with product development, while Paul and Armand took charge of marketing and distribution. While denim was the foundation of their brand, they certainly didn’t stop there.
A Novel Approach
Marciano’s first innovative idea was to make women’s jeans with three zippers. He called his first form-fitting pair “Marilyn." The stonewashed design featured sliding zippers on each ankle and the now-iconic inverted triangle logo on the back pocket. After just a year of selling in their flagship Beverly Hills store and the Bloomingdales department store, Guess Jeans sales reached the million-dollar mark. Boosted by their incredible success, the Marciano brothers began aggressively marketing the brand internationally. It didn’t take long for Guess to take over an eager global market. Guess eventually expanded into producing fashion accessories, including shoes, watches, jewelry, and perfumes. Guess watches, in particular, embody innovative style, maintaining the unique Guess style stamp.
