Brothers Adolf and Alfred Kurth founded Certina in the Swiss village of Grenchen in 1888. Alfred’s sons, Erwin and Hans, joined the family company in the mid-1920s. By 1939, they had officially chosen the Certina name. Certina broke new ground when they unveiled the iconic Certina DS concept in 1959. The shock and water-resistant model set a new standard for durability. Shortly after, Certina adopted its turtle shell logo to symbolize robustness and longevity. In 1960, the Certina DS was taken on the first successful expedition into the Himalayas, where it ascended to a height of 8,167 meters without failing. Over the years, Certina has been worn by notable sporting figures including boxing legend Muhammad Ali and Ole Einar Bjørndalen.
