A Talent for Design
From an early age, Giorgio Armani took an interest in the human form. After studying medicine and a stint as a window dresser in Milan, he trained under legendary designer Nino Cerruti and opened his own design office. During this period he collaborated with fashion houses Gibò, Bagutta, and Hilton, among others, gaining exposure to the catwalks of Sala Bianca in Florence’s Palazzo Pitti. In July 1975, Armani founded his namesake label and released a debut line of men’s and women’s ready-to-wear clothing to critical acclaim.
Throughout the 1980s, Armani transformed the wardrobe of professional men and women from the stiff suits and floral skirts of the day to softened pastel jackets and deconstructed pantsuits. He launched his second brand, Emporio Armani, to appeal to the young adult demographic at an attainable price point. Armani expanded into additional sub-brands during the 1990s, unveiling Armani Exchange in 1991. Also focused on young adults, Armani Exchange offers accessible streetwear with an urban-chic aesthetic.
